What does it take to produce kava?
Kava Cultivation
Kava does not grow and propagate as you may expect!
In the distant past, the lush kava kava shrub thrived in its natural habitat on the damp, tropical slopes and low-lying peaks of the South Pacific islands. However, as time went on, these plants lost their ability to reproduce naturally, rendering the kava root and plant dependent on manual propagation for their existence.
The kava plant is unable to reproduce on its own due to its sterility.
Female flowers are exceedingly rare and incapable of bearing fruit or seeds, even when the plant is pollinated by hand.
To cultivate and cultivate new kava plants, farmers employ propagation techniques. Each kava plant is carefully nurtured from a node on a 3″-4″ section of a stalk, which, when planted in the ground, will give rise to a fresh kava plant.
When it comes to planting and cultivating kava shoots, there are two methods to consider: horizontal or vertical placement. It is crucial to ensure that the cuttings are kept in a shaded and moist environment.
If the cuttings are placed horizontally, both the stem and kava root are likely to sprout from the same node.
On the other hand, if they are planted vertically, the lower node will primarily develop roots, while the upper node will give rise to a new shoot. Eventually, this shoot will transform into a new stem with leaves.
Once the kava plants have reached a sufficient height and strength, they can be relocated to an area where they can receive at least 30% shade (and even more for younger plants) among other surrounding plants.
When allowed to reach their full growth potential, kava plants have the ability to grow to an impressive height of fifteen feet.
In the case of kava plants cultivated specifically for root harvesting, they typically reach a height of around six feet before they can be harvested.
The roots of kava plants used in the production of kava tea can extend up to two feet beneath the soil surface.
As the kava plant matures, its roots have the potential to reach a length of up to two feet. Harvesting the roots is typically done after a minimum of two years, although waiting for four to five years yields a more well-rounded flavor and a higher concentration of kavalactones.
Kavalactones are the chemical compounds found in the kava plant that interact with the kavalactone receptors in our bodies. These kavalactones are responsible for producing the relaxing and uplifting effects associated with kava consumption.
With the growing demand for organic kava root powder, some farmers have started harvesting their kava roots as early as 18 months. However, this premature harvesting can result in an inferior-quality product that may not provide the desired effects.
After the kava plant reaches maturity and the kava root system reaches a suitable size, kava cultivators will gather the entire plant. This involves using the stems to create new cuttings and washing and peeling the stump and roots for the purpose of drying them.
The most optimal location for drying the kava roots is in a shaded area where temperatures remain below 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because high temperatures can cause damage to the active compounds present in the kava root. Throughout the drying process, it is crucial to ensure that the root pieces are well-ventilated and regularly rotated to prevent the growth of fungus and mold.
Once the roots have completely dried, they are either pounded or ground into kava powder and then packaged for shipping.
